Location: Sedona, AZ

Date: completion 2001

Known as “Edge of Eden” by the owners, this charming 2,700 sq.ft. home is perched on a 150-ft. cliff overlooking the Oak Creek valley, Cathedral Rock and the wild country of Sedona. This home was a favorite on the 2001 Sedona Art and Architecture tour.

Originally constructed with fired adobe brick in 1968, the home featured three bedrooms and a large courtyard overlooking the creek panorama. The renovation honored the strong shell of the home. The only floor area added is the new media room within a former one-car garage.

However, the renovation completely gutted the original 1968 interior, raised the ceilings and created a fabulous one-bedroom home.

In the kitchen, copper accents include a hammered copper counter and splash. The main countertops are Silestone. The cabinets are a mix of maple with a natural finish and grooved panels painted green. The kitchen overlooks the living room and the dramatic view beyond. The new raised ceilings with exposed structural beams offer airiness and drama.

In a separate new ranch-style building are the guest quarters, ceramic workshop and kiln, and a three-car garage.

The fireplace facing was also renovated. The owner, Diane Briney, is a ceramist and created these beautiful fireplace tiles. The coyote on the hearth is also her work.

New features added to the home include a private pool and spa located adjacent to the master suite.

The spa, with red rock waterfalls, is on the very edge of the cliffs above Oak Creek.

In the fantastic central courtyard is a new koi pond with another red rock fountain. The courtyard’s original concrete paving was stained and grouted to resemble tiles.

To the north of the home, in a former parking area, is the barbeque courtyard. An outdoor kitchen and trellis over the dining table offer an inviting gathering spot. The sweeping views and sounds of Oak Creek are enjoyed here, as they are throughout the home.
