An organically-designed home, this residence opens to and captures the surrounding dynamic views, while fully integrating with the natural landscape. Rooms are airy and open but are simultaneously cozy and nurturing with spaces arranged to provide for family, friends, parties or just two.
The home nestles into the gently sloping site, with the primary roofs following the slope of the land. Similar to the low-slung “Prairie Style” Craftsman homes of 100-years ago, this home is perhaps “Slope Style” with broad eaves and glass walls framed by strong and rooted columns of stone.
The overall design idea for the home is to not intrude on the living experience, but to be secondary to enjoying the Arizona life, sun and views. The composition is not all about the structure, or an architectural statement, but is more of the experience of being in and around the home. The design is about framing the views and supporting the inhabitants, placing everything comfortably within reach.
Southwestern images of the desert – the forms, textures and colors of the Anasazi dwellings, the canyons, the still ponds in sandstone hollows, and the unique vegetation – are found through out the design. The home embodies the serene coolness of an oasis amidst the warmth of the desert sun
Patios at all aspects of the home ensure a continued, year-round indoor-outdoor connection. The great room’s 24? wide sliding pocket door of glass provides a pool pavilion effect even for the living room. The kitchen’s continuous skylight band extends outside over the outdoor kitchen and pool lounge, providing filtered or dramatic sunlight depending on the time of day – and is similar to the sun in a slot canyon. Upstairs, past the gym and game room, these same skylights provide glass cocktail tables on the roof deck. This roof deck is also the starlight theater – provided by the projection movie screen and the celestial bodies overhead.
High performance insulation, in-floor hydronic heating, solar heated hot water and LED lighting reduce the energy demands. Geothermal wells provide the pool and spa heating as well as providing the home’s heating and cooling. And all is powered from the large, roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels that are hidden from view. The homes sustainable features and renewable energy systems enable a near net-zero energy use.
Exteriors and interiors integrate seamlessly by the great room pocket door, but also by the design of courtyards opening to many other aspects of the home. The extensive window walls, consistent use of materials from the exterior to the interior, and the poetic finishes and furnishings by Divya Barter all provide for a seamless transition outside. Interior doors are vertical grain fir, cabinets are walnut and cherry. Flooring is predominately travertine inside and quartzite on the patios, along with walnut and integral colored, hand-polished concrete
A steel-framed trellis for wisteria and jasmine connects the home to the guest casita with shade. The natural moss-rock cascade fountain provides a backdrop for the spa and a focal point for the master suite. Another fantastic wall fountain of glass and stone is at the Zen sun patio that also shelters an infra-red sauna. The massive front door distills the composition of the home into a simple, yet elegant entry: it is crafted of natural-edged planks of native mesquite wood strongly framing clear glass panels that provide a preview of the majestic views through the home.
